That year was an anomaly — a low point in countries’ lead times.
In the decade to 2010, Europe’s adjusted lead time rose from 22 to 28 years, while Asia’s fell from 26 to 22 years. By 2010, the United States’ adjusted lead time was 40 years — almost double that of China. The Chinese economy is now slowing, and the uptick in the U.S. was entirely due to growth in the last few years of the decade.
But Australia was the biggest loser over the decade. Its lead time dropped by almost four years, from 25 to 21. (The black line at the bottom of the graph tracks the average of the main countries in the world, which has also gradually grown longer.)
China’s 10-year decline is perhaps related to the housing market cooling of 2011 and 2012. Australia’s was due to low commodity prices and a mining downturn.
The idea that lead times are normal is rooted in the history of the 20th century — the world’s economic history is ultimately a competition to see who can industrialize. During the heyday of European manufacturing, the world was doing pretty well, with Japan and the U.S. growing alongside the European model.
When the U.S. industrialized, it became a leader in lead times, and the longer lead times were a huge factor in its lead over other developed countries in per-capita income and other measures.
Since then, the United States has followed in the footsteps of others and has adopted long lead times. Australia and other parts of the world have been trying to catch up.
One theory about why there might be different lead times in different regions is that different nations use different kinds of raw materials, which in turn affects what they can make and what they can get away with producing. In America, where iron and steel were crucial, that meant fewer variation between regions and so more lead time. Other countries did not need that much variation to compete and therefore saw more regional differentiation in lead times.
